What is a bone density test?

A bone density test is a test conducted to diagnose osteoporosis. This test determines the density of the bones, which helps to:

  • - Identify bone density decreases before a bone breaks
  • - Determine the risk of bone fractures
  • - Confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • - Monitor osteoporosis treatment

What does the bone density test entail?

Bone density tests are normally conducted on bones that are at risk of breaking due to osteoporosis. The test is normally done bones on the lower spine, the narrow neck of the thighbone (called a femur), and bones in the forearm.

During the procedure, you will be exposed to a very low amount of radiation, and a small portable machine will then measure your bone density. The results show whether there is a decrease in your bone mass.
