MAMMOGRAM
What is a mammogram?
A mammogram is a breast x-ray that is used to examine the breast tissue. This procedure is conducted to detect and diagnose breast cancer in women who are experiencing breast issues such as pain, lumps, or nipple discharge. A mammogram may also be done in women who are not experiencing any breast problems.
Women who are above 40 years are advised to have a mammogram done every one to two years, and regular screening begins at the age of 45 years. Diagnostic mammograms are more extensive than screening mammograms, as they require more x-rays to be done in order to view the breast from multiple positions.
What does a mammogram entail?
During the procedure, each breast will be placed on a flat x-ray plate, and a compressor will push your breast down in order to flatten the tissue. This will then provide Dr Vatharajh with clear images of your breast and help her detect and diagnose cancer.
